Book Marketing Buzz: Book Promotion & Publicity Tips: How to Promote Your Books is a continuing series to help authors learn how to promote their books. If you would like to be a guest blogger for our book promotion and publicity series, click here. Our guest blogger for today is #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jackson, author of the romantic suspense novel, Lost Souls.
Whenever I have a new book coming out, I plan to do my share of author-promotion and publicity. I usually work hand in hand (or is it hand in glove?) with my publisher. I often tour and then through my own publicist or the publishing house try to generate as much publicity as possible. I do interviews via the Internet, radio, television and newspapers wherever I go. Of course I speak at conferences or book groups, but I think my best marketing tool is the Internet.
Ever since I learned about the web, I was fascinated and saw it as a way to reach a huge group of readers I couldn’t possibly contact personally. I set about putting up the best website I could and hooked into a reader/author community. From there I set up contests and puzzles and polls, as many things that were interactive as were possible. My web people did creative things with characters and settings. For example, you can visit my website and walk through the creepy hallways of the mental asylum, Our Lady Of Virtues featured in SHIVER and ABSOLUTE FEAR. There are character galleries with pictures of Detectives Rick Bentz and Reuben Montoya (and a cast of thousands) from the entire New Orleans Series. I put up recipes with excerpts from the books and just lately not only have I started blogging, but I have active pages on myspace.com and facebook.com. I’m working with Second Life, but my, oh, my that’s a work in progress. Currently I’ve put up trailers, podcasts and am working on an Interactive map of All Saints College from LOST SOULS which will be on the website soon. I think the opportunities on the Internet are only limited by one’s own imagination.
Check it out at www.lisajackson.com and let me know what you think. As I said you can visit me on myspace.com where also Kristi Bentz, the heroine of LOST SOULS and Detective Reuben Montoya have pages.
I try to be as cutting edge on the web as is possible for a woman who grew up in a tiny timber town in Oregon. And while I’m doing it—I’m havin’ a whole lotta fun!
Lisa Jackson’s novels include the upcoming LOST SOULS and the best sellers Absolute Fear, which will be published in paperback for the first time in March, Hot Blooded, Cold Blooded, The Night Before, The Morning After, Deep Freeze, Fatal Burn, and Almost Dead. Last year, Most Likely to Die, written by Lisa, Beverly Barton and Wendy Corsi Staub was published and became a number three New York Times paperback bestseller. She is a member of the Mystery Writers of America, the International Thriller Writers and the Romance Writers of America . This is fabulous advice and I hope more authors pay attention. So many author think that once they have written the book their work is done. But I know how hard it is to promote. Lisa, you do a great job and are an inspiration.
